Jules Verne - Doctor Ox’s Experiment and Other Short Stories
Doctor Ox's Experiment and Other Short Stories by Jules Verne
Jules Verne pioneered the genre of science-fiction. He is best known for his novels "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1864), "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (1870), and "Around the World in Eighty Days" (1873).
Verne wrote about space, air, and underwater travel before navigable aircraft and practical submarines were invented, and before any means of space travel had been devised. He is the third most translated author of all time. His prominent novels have been made into films. Verne, along with H. G. Wells, is often referred to as the "Father of Science Fiction". And this is a nice collection with ten of his short stories.

Alexandre Dumas - The Wolf Leader
The Wolf Leader by Alexandre Dumas
The Wolf Leader is set around 1780 in Dumas' native town of Villers-Cotterêts, and is supposedly based on a local folk-tale Dumas heard as a child.
The story concerns Thibault, a shoe-maker, who is beaten by the gamekeeper of the Lord of Vez for interfering with the lord's hunting. Afterwards he encounters a huge wolf, walking on its hind legs like a man, who offers him vengeance; Thibault may wish harm on any person in return for one of his own hairs for each wish. To seal the agreement, the two exchange rings. As a result of this bargain he also finds himself able to command the local wolves, and hence gradually gains the reputation of being a werewolf.
Thibault's first two wishes kill the gamekeeper and injure the Lord of Vez. The wishes turn two hairs on his head long and red, as do his subsequent ones, which, though equally successful, also backfire against him in unexpected ways, leaving him scorned and hated by others in his community.

Alice & Claude Askew - Aylmer Vance: Ghost-Seer
This is a collection of eight ghost stories, written by the remarkably
prolific husband and wife team of Claude and Alice Askew, centering on
Aylmer Vance, an investigator of the supernatural. Dexter, the narrator,
meets Vance during a fishing holiday and Vance tells him three ghost
stories on successive nights, each story involving Vance more closely in
the action. The fourth story brings Dexter himself into the action, and
reveals him to have unsuspected clairvoyant powers. The remaining
stories feature Vance and Dexter as a sort of Holmes-and-Watson team
investigating incidents not all of which prove to have supernatural
causes.
The final story, “The Fear” is very effective, describing a house in which a general feeling of extreme fear grips the inhabitants at various times and locations; the emotion of fear is effectively evoked and an interesting tale is constructed as Vance and Dexter work to assign the fear “a local habitation and a name”.

Carolyn Wells - Deep Lake Mystery
Deel Lake Mystery by Carolyn Wells
Imagine a murder committed in a room which has been sealed from the inside, with no possible means of exit. Add to that image a wreath of flowers around the head and across the chest of the victim, a crucifix, an orange, a feather scarf tucked in here and there, two crackers, a handkerchief, and a feather duster, a nail and a watch in a water pitcher by the bedside. Place yourself in a position to solve the mystery behind this obvious murder of a wealthy man who was liked by everyone and had no known enemies.
Gray Norris is invited to join detective Keeley Moore and his wife at their vacation cottage at Deep Lake, for a relaxing month. That goes by the wayside when one of the Moore's neighbors is killed under bizarre circumstances behind a locked door. The only way the killer could have escaped the room was by diving from a third story window into the dangerous water below, avoiding hidden rocks and currents that could drag a swimmer under for good.

George MacDonald - Lilith
This is the story of Mr Vane, an orphan
and heir to a large house - in which he has a vision that leads him
through an old mirror into another world. In the trips he makes to this
other world, he explores the mystery of evil. Mr. Vane owns a library
that seems to be haunted by the former librarian, who looks much like a
raven. After finally encountering the mysterious Mr. Raven, Vane learns
that Raven had known his father; indeed, Vane's father had visited the
strange parallel universe from which Raven comes and goes. Vane follows
Raven into the world through the mirror.
Lilith, written by the father of fantasy literature, George MacDonald, is considered among the darkest of MacDonald's works, and among the most profound.
George MacDonald is one of the most severely underrated authors of all time. A contemporary to Lewis Carroll and major influence on C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, this man’s imagination apparently knew no bounds and that is incredibly apparent in his masterpiece, Lilith.

Charles Williams - War in Heaven
The Holy Grail surfaces in an obscure country parish in England and
becomes variously a sacramental object to protect or a vessel of power
to exploit. A group of three dark magicians attempt to use it as a power
base and a means of destruction. The three who oppose them are an
Archdeacon, a Duke, and a Clerk in a publishing house.
The battle of good versus evil is played out over the acquisition of the Grail which passes between the two sides. The use of the Grail by the forces of evil displays characters that are not your stereotypical villains. There is the banality of evil about them that makes what they do even more scary.
Of the three Inkling fantasy writers Charles Williams is the least known and appreciated. Yet, his series of supernatural fantasy novels are every bit as interesting and original as the books by C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien.
No 44 in Dennis Wheatley Library of the Occult.

Herminie Templeton Kavanagh - The Adventures of Darby O'Gill and the Little People
These Whimsical folktales bring you the jumble and tumble of men and
magical creatures who walk the lanes of the Emerald Isle by day and
wander its fields by night.
This history sets forth the only true account of the adventures of a
daring Tipperary man named Darby O'Gill among the Fairies of
Sleive-na-mon. These little people had long been feared by the good
folk, always frightened that some curse might lead even the best of
souls unto an exile in the fairy realm. Darby may not be able to hold
onto their boon of three wishes or avoid being the butt of a joke, but
he does earn the respect of their King and the chance to be merry with
his friends from the enchanted realm.
The Adventures of Darby O'Gill brings together the tales originally
published in Herminie Templeton Kavanagh's two books, Darby O'Gill and the Good People, and
Ashes of Old Wishes. The stories, filled with humor and adventure,
bring Irish fairy mythology to life, as Darby and other characters meet
these supernatural creatures.

Clarence Darrow - The Story of My Life
Clarence Darrow (April 18, 1857 – March
13, 1938) was an American lawyer and leading member of the American
Civil Liberties Union. He was best known for defending teenage thrill
killers Leopold and Loeb in their trial for murdering 14-year-old Robert
"Bobby" Franks (1924). Some of his other notable cases included
defending Ossian Sweet, and John T. Scopes in the Scopes "Monkey" Trial
(1925), in which he opposed William Jennings Bryan (statesman, noted
orator, and three-time presidential candidate). Called a "sophisticated
country lawyer", he remains notable for his wit, which marked him as one
of the most famous American lawyers and civil libertarians.
Today, Clarence Darrow is remembered for his reputation as a fierce
litigator who, in many cases, championed the cause of the underdog;
because of this, he is generally regarded as one of the greatest
criminal defense lawyers in American history and therefor has he served
as a model for almost every lawyer on film or television.

Edith Nesbit - The Wonderful Garden
Do you believe in magic? Caroline, Charles and Charlotte do, and nothing
that happens during their summer holiday at their great uncle's house
does anything to diminish that belief. There the Three C.'s find a
wonderful garden and some very old books, resulting in escapades which
do not necessarily please the grown-ups.
Edith Nesbit, as usual, transports us back to the hazy summer days of a
well-to-do Edwardian childhood, liberally spiced with magic, humour and
lessons learned.
As Gore Vidal once wrote: "...though a reading of E. Nesbit is hardly
going to change the pattern of a nation, there is some evidence that the
child who reads her will never be quite the same again, and that is
probably a good thing."
Published more than 100 years ago, this is one of Nesbit's least-known
children's books, out of print for many years but now it is finally
back.

Howard Pyle - The Story of King Arthur and his Knights
In these wonderfully illustrated tales,
renowned storyteller Howard Pyle carries us back to the enchanting world
of King Arthur and his Round Table. The book chronicles the adventures
of Arthur as he draws the sword Excalibur from the anvil, proving his
right to the throne, and as he courts and wins the heart of Guinevere.
Later he suffers the treachery of the wicked Morgana le Fay and
witnesses the tragic fate of the Enchanter Merlin. In Pyle’s classic
retelling, the legends come alive in unsurpassed vividness. More
powerful than any of Merlin’s spells, The Story of King Arthur and His
Knights has enthralled and delighted generations of readers fascinated
by chivalry, magic, and the unforgettable drama of medieval times.
A wonderfully fantastical and compelling version of the Arthur legend.
Howard Pyle's stories of King Arthur and his knights are themselves
legendary. Colorful tales of chivalry are combined with his own detailed
illustrations to create an elegant and beautiful book.

Bram Stoker - Under the Sunset and other fantasy stories
Bram Stoker is most remembered for Dracula, but he wrote a lot of other books including this lovely collection of fantasy short stories.
Far, far away, there is a beautiful Country which no human eye has ever seen in waking hours. Under the Sunset it lies, where the distant horizon bounds the day, and where the clouds, splendid with light and color, give a promise of the glory and beauty that encompass it. Sometimes it is given to us to see it in dreams. This Country is the Land Under the Sunset. This is the story of that Country, and what happened when evil came to abide there. It is a story all of us must hear.

historia.

Eleanor M Ingram - The Thing from the Lake
To get away from city life periodically, New Yorker Roger Locke
purchases an abandoned farm house in rural Connecticut, and with the
assistance of his cousin Phillida and her beau Ethan Vere, he sets about
fixing up the place.
Immediately however, an unseen mysterious woman begins giving him
warnings during nocturnal visits to leave the house at once. Soon he
begins hearing strange ominous sounds emanating from the tiny lake at
the back of the house coupled with a permeation of sickly odors. An evil
presence then begins to visit him during the witching hours of the late
night, challenging him to a battle of wits from which there can be only
one victor.
Is his mysterious female visitor there to help and encourage him to flee
from the house, or is she working in tandem with The Thing From the
Lake?
A gripping, occasionally frightening tale, Ms. Eleanor M Ingram wastes no time in
grabbing the reader into the story and manages to weave a tale that will
leave the reader guessing at every turn of events.

Carolyn Wells - The Man Who Fell Through the Earth
The Man Who Fell Through the Earth by Carolyn Wells. A lawyer is leaving his office on the top floor of an office building.
He sees the shadows of two men fighting through the clouded glass of an
office door followed by a shot from the office across the hall. He goes
to investigate. He finds no sign of either victim or assailant despite
the fact that no one could have passed him in the hallway without being
seen. A murder has been committed, that of the banker. Who is the
murderer? A business associate, the banker’s beautiful ward, or a
mysterious woman who had been in the office earlier? And what part, if
any, was played by the amnesia victim pulled from the river; a man who
insists that his earliest memory is of falling through a hole in the
earth?

Francis Stevens - The Heads of Cerberus
Written by the woman whose pseudonym was Francis Stevens, it has been
hailed as the first alternate history novel. Fantasy master H. P.
Lovecraft hailed Francis Stevens as among "the top grade of writers."
"The Heads of Cerberus" tells of "an alternate-world Philadelphia,
reached by a handful of this-world people. This Philadelphia is one in
which the political corruptors have become ruthless autocrats, ruling
through phony "civic service" competitions which result in cynically
brutal enslavement of the people. The name of William Penn has become,
under the organizational label of "Penn Service," the very fountainhead
of viciously depraved, dictatorial government. Definitely a classic and
fun to read."

Clara Tschudi - Ludwig II King of Bavaria
Ludwig II - the Fairy Tale King - was King
of Bavaria from 1864 until his mysterious death.
He succeeded to the throne aged 18. Two years later Bavaria was
effectively absorbed into the German Empire. Ludwig remained King of
Bavaria, but largely ignored such state affairs as remained to Bavaria
in favor of extravagant artistic and architectural projects. He
commissioned the construction of two lavish palaces and the
Neuschwanstein Castle, and was a devoted patron of the composer Richard
Wagner.
Ludwig spent the royal revenues (but not state funds) on these projects,
borrowed extensively, and defied all attempts by his ministers to
restrain him. This was used against him to declare him insane, an
accusation which has since been refuted, and this led to his mysterious
death. Was it suicide, an accident or a murder?
Ludwig is well-regarded and even revered by many Bavarians today. His
legacy of architecture and art includes many of Bavaria's important
tourist attractions.

for personal gain, only to discover that it is they themselves being
used by a power beyond their comprehension; some will find themselves

most dangerous object in existence.

Collected Swedish Folk Tales
The following volume of Swedish folk-tales represents a careful choice,
after the best original sources, of those examples of their kind which
not only appeared most colorful and entertaining, but also most racially
Swedish in their flavor. For the fairy-tales of each of the three
Scandinavian countries, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, have a distinct
local color of their own. The wealth of material available has made it
possible to give due representation to most types of fairy-tales, from
the stories of older origin, the tales of giant, troll, and werewolf, to
such delightful tales as "Lasse, My Thrall", "The Princess and the
Glass Mountain" and "Prince Hat under the Ground" colored with the rich
and ornate stylistic garb of medieval chivalric poesy. There has been no
attempt to "rewrite" these charming folk-and fairy-tales in the
translation. This book is not illustrated.

Aurora Ljungstedt - Hastfordska vapnet
internationellt perspektiv. ”Hastfordska vapnet” är därmed ännu en av
Aurora Ljungstedts milstolpar inom svensk litteraturhistoria.

Mary Shelly - The Last Man
The Last Man
Mary Shelley, most famous for “Frankenstein” also wrote several other novels and short stories. “The Last Man” was her second best-seller, written about ten years after the publication of “Frankenstein”. The Last Man is an apocalyptic science fiction novel about tragic love and a future world that has been ravaged by a plague. It reflects Shelley's fears about civilization and the shortcomings of human behavior. Lionel Verney, the narrator and last survivor of a twenty-first century plague, recounts how he discovers a manuscript written in 2100. But aside from the novel being delightful and arguably obscure entertainment for the Romantic literature aficionado, it is the foundation of English Sci-Fi from H.G. Wells to Arthur C. Clarke, not to mention such works as “The Stand” by Stephen King and “I am Legend” by Richard Matheson.

Algernon Blackwood - The Extra Day
The Extra Day
Algernon Blackwood's tale is about three children growing up in the Old Mill House in the Victorian era. Judy, Tim, and Maria were just little children. It was impossible to say exactly what their ages were, except that they were just the usual age, that Judy was the eldest, Maria the youngest, and that Tim, accordingly, came in between the two. When their Uncle Felix comes to visit, his magical storytelling and patience with the children impacts their lives significantly. There is a great deal of foreshadowing that a great surprise is coming with a great revelation. For instance, Uncle Felix says, "Time always prevents, doesn't it? If only we could make it stop - get behind time, as it were - we might have a chance. Some day, perhaps, we shall." Uncle Felix challenges the children to talk to the night wind and ask it for answers. Although this book was not necessarily written for children, it is a great book to read to kids.

Unknown Authors - Sweeney Todd
Sweeney Todd is a barber who dispatches his victims by pulling a lever
as they sit in his barber chair. His victims fall backward down a
revolving trapdoor into the basement of his shop, generally causing them
to break their necks or skulls. In case they are alive, Todd goes to
the basement and "polishes them off" (slitting their throats with his
straight razor). After Todd has robbed his dead victims of their goods,
Mrs. Lovett, his partner in crime, assists him in disposing of the
bodies by baking their flesh into meat pies and selling them to the
unsuspecting customers of her pie shop.
