M.Y. Halidom - Zoé's Revenge

A strong tale of the supernatural. Zoé is murdered in a fit of rage by her lover. Her skeleton is disposed of as the basis of an anatomically correct artist manikin. In the fullest extent of the concept, you can't keep a good girl down. Reanimated, she sets out for revenge. Zoé's Revenge is a gruesome fin-de-siecle thriller by the largely-unknown British author M.Y. Halidom (pseud. for Alexander Huth), notable not only for its rarity and the author's pedigree, but for its carefully composed balance of terror and romance. Moreso than in Halidom's The Woman in Black, a similarly-themed supernatural shocker, this novel focuses on the protagonist's budding romance alongside his shaded past in a measured, chapter by chapter interplay. By contrasting an optimistic Edwardian grand tour storyline with the titular gloomy, brooding horror, Halidom manages to concoct a unique brand of beyond-the-grave revenge tale.

William Morris - The House of the Wolfings

William Morris - The House of the Wolfings

His fascination with ancient Germanic and Norse people dominated his writings, the first to be set in an entirely invented fantasy world and which helped to establish the fantasy genre.

The House of Wolfings, it tells the story of how Thiodolf and his clan - the Wolfings - fight and vanquish the Roman invaders. The book is built with Morris' knowledge of the historical period and his own idealistic views, which allow him to combine facts and mythical elements. Thiodolf is protected by a dwarfish coat of mail, given to him by his lover Wood Sun, herself one of the Vala, the immortals. But things are not what they seem and what is meant to protect him, is also a curse...

In a letter, Tolkien referred to The Lord of the Rings when he wrote, “The Dead Marshes and the approaches to the Morannon owe something to Northern France after the Battle of the Somme. They owe more to William Morris and his Huns and Romans, as in The House of the Wolfings or The Roots of the Mountains.”

Arthur Morrison - The Shadows Around Us

The Shadows Around Us - Authentic Tales of the Supernatural

The incidents set forth in the ensuing pages are as completely testified to as written facts well may be—that is to say, infinitely more care has been taken to verify and substantiate them than is taken to authenticate the matter-of-fact news published in a daily newspaper and accepted by everybody without question. For several of the cases the compiler is indebted to the investigations of the Society for Psychical Research.
