Meade & Eustace - The Brotherhood of the Seven Kings

The Brotherhood of the Seven King, by L T Meade and Robert Eustace, is a series of linked short stories involving what may well be the world’s first female diabolical criminal mastermind, Madame Koluchy.

The narrator, Norman Head, had as a young man met Madame Koluchy in Naples when he became involved in a secret criminal society known as the Brotherhood of the Seven Kings. Madame Koluchy had been the head of this society. When Head discovered the sinister nature of the society he determined to have no more to do with them. He has since been living as a virtual recluse, amusing himself with scientific experiments.

Now their paths have crossed again, and Head realizes this will be a duel to the death. She cannot afford to let him live while his honour will not allow him to permit her to ruin any more lives.

Madame Koluchy is also a scientist, and a doctor. In fact she is the most famous doctor in London, her apparently miraculous cures having made her a celebrity while her charm and beauty have made her the darling of English society.

With the aid of his friend Dufrayer, an eminent solicitor, Norman Head is determined to bring this woman to justice. Madame Koluchy uses her medical skills to gain the trust of her victims. They then find themselves the victims of blackmail, robbery, kidnapping or worse crimes.

Carolyn Wells - Deep Lake Mystery

Deel Lake Mystery by Carolyn Wells

Imagine a murder committed in a room which has been sealed from the inside, with no possible means of exit. Add to that image a wreath of flowers around the head and across the chest of the victim, a crucifix, an orange, a feather scarf tucked in here and there, two crackers, a handkerchief, and a feather duster, a nail and a watch in a water pitcher by the bedside. Place yourself in a position to solve the mystery behind this obvious murder of a wealthy man who was liked by everyone and had no known enemies.

Gray Norris is invited to join detective Keeley Moore and his wife at their vacation cottage at Deep Lake, for a relaxing month. That goes by the wayside when one of the Moore's neighbors is killed under bizarre circumstances behind a locked door. The only way the killer could have escaped the room was by diving from a third story window into the dangerous water below, avoiding hidden rocks and currents that could drag a swimmer under for good.

Carolyn Wells - The Man Who Fell Through the Earth

The Man Who Fell Through the Earth by Carolyn Wells. A lawyer is leaving his office on the top floor of an office building. He sees the shadows of two men fighting through the clouded glass of an office door followed by a shot from the office across the hall. He goes to investigate. He finds no sign of either victim or assailant despite the fact that no one could have passed him in the hallway without being seen. A murder has been committed, that of the banker. Who is the murderer? A business associate, the banker’s beautiful ward, or a mysterious woman who had been in the office earlier? And what part, if any, was played by the amnesia victim pulled from the river; a man who insists that his earliest memory is of falling through a hole in the earth?

Aurora Ljungstedt - Hastfordska vapnet

Ernest William Hornung - Raffles, the Amateur Cracksman

By Ernest William Hornung.
Gentleman thief Raffles is daring, debonair, devilishly handsome-and a first-rate cricketer. In these stories, the master burglar indulges his passion for cricket and crime: stealing jewels from a country house, outwitting the law, pilfering from the nouveau riche, and, of course, bowling like a demon-all with the assistance of his plucky sidekick, Bunny. Encouraged by his brother-in-law, Arthur Conan Doyle, to write a series about a public school villain, and influenced by his own experiences at Uppingham, E. W. Hornung created a unique form of crime story, where, in stealing as in sport, it is playing the game that counts, and there is always honor among thieves. The Complete Story - All four books in one volume.

J. Sheridan Le Fanu - In a Glass Darkly

This remarkable collection of stories, by Sheridan Le Fanu, includes Green Tea, The Familiar, Mr. Justice Harbottle, The Room in the Dragon Volant, and Carmilla. The five stories are purported to be cases by Dr. Hesselius, a 'metaphysical' doctor, who is willing to consider the ghosts both as real and as hallucinatory obsessions. The reader's doubtful anxiety mimics that of the protagonist, and each story thus creates that atmosphere of mystery which is the supernatural experience.

L. T. Meade & Robert Eustace - John Bell, A Master of Mysteries

A Master of Mysteries, first published in 1898, concerning John Bell, a 'professional exposer of ghosts' who solves the mysteries of haunted houses. "It so happened that the circumstances of fate allowed me to follow my own bent in the choice of a profession. From my earliest youth the weird, the mysterious had an irresistible fascination for me. Having private means, I resolved to follow my unique inclinations, and I am now well known to all my friends as a professional exposer of ghosts, and one who can clear away the mysteries of most haunted houses....I propose in these pages to relate the histories of certain queer events, enveloped at first in mystery, and apparently dark with portent, but, nevertheless, when grappled with in the true spirit of science, capable of explanation." - from the Introduction to "A Master of Mysteries".
